Today (Thursday 6th) Bill Shelley and I (Bill Chapman) represented Rivenhall Oaks GC in the National Captain Pro competition at Bush Hill Park GC.
Our Tee Time was 9.00am playing with the team from Toot Hill GC. The format was better ball with Bill S playing off 3/4 handicap (12 shots). The first hole is a good par 3 playing 180 yards into a slight breeze, Bill S went first, being announced on the tee by the starter and around 20 people were gathered around the First teeing ground. Bill hit a good shot with a utility club just short of the green, I then set up to a 4 iron and hit a perfect shot in to 2 feet, just the start we hoped for!! After we both made a 2 (net 2) we moved on to the 2nd hole a 390 yard par 4, I made another birdie to go 2 under par through 2 holes. The 3rd hole was a good Par 4, up hill about 360yards we made a good par to stay 2 under. The 4th is a tempting par 4 which is only 280 yards with out of bounds tucked near the left side of the green, after 2 shots neither of us were on the putting surface and Bill then chipped up to a few feet, I set up over a 52 degree wedge from 8 yards from the pin and holed it for our 3rd birdie in 4 holes.
The round was going better than we could have ever imagined possible until the 8th hole where we both had a nightmare!! I don't think we could believe that the 8 shots on the card after that short par 4 were actually ours. This had undone all of the good work at the start of the round. After another 3 birdies and a 2 net 1 from bill on the good 13th hole we ended up with a net 64 which was good enough for a 16th place finish. Out of the 45 teams that took part I guarantee that we had the highest score on any one hole, but thats the way golf goes sometimes.
